New Findings Released from NASEM Workshop on TBI in Older Adults

May 8, 2025, 10:50 AM by SCOA

Findings are now available from the October 2024 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) workshop, "Approaches to Address Unmet Research Needs in Traumatic Brain Injury Among Older Adults." This important event gathered experts to explore the research gaps and clinical challenges of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in adults aged 65 and older.

Workshop participants—including panelists like Dr. Monique Pappadis, who contributed to the session on post-acute TBI care—examined strategies to improve evidence-based guidance and advance recovery outcomes for this growing population.

The official Workshop Proceedings have now been published, along with an interactive overview featuring videos and resources.

Although traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of disability for older adults, clinically relevant differences in TBI injury, recovery, and outcomes in this age group limit evidence-based care guidance. The @NASEM Health and Medicine Division held an October 2024 workshop to explore unmet research needs to address TBI among older adults and consider strategies to support the translation of new knowledge to practice. Access the proceedings and other resources here.

Please help share this important work with colleagues and networks working in aging, brain health, rehabilitation, and healthcare policy.
